Anyway, my game has grown.  The scope of this blog doesn’t necessarily reflect the content and audience that I’d like to speak to (and usually offend).  I’ve decided to take cues from The Selvedge Yard, A Conversation On Cool, A Time To Get, and the many other great blogs I follow of similar genres and start The Forgotten Gent. I have quite a bit of work to do to come close to achieving the level of quality content that those sites do.  But, I believe I have a point of view that, with some effort, will stand on its own.

Thanks for following this blog.  I really do appreciate you following the randomness of my subjects and the irregularity of my posts.  I think you’ll find more consistency over at TFG.  I can’t say that my posting frequency will be any more predictable, however.

Either way, I invite you over to TFG.  Your support is very much appreciated.  Additionally, please feel free to leave me feedback on how I can do better.

The Official Top 5 Reasons Men Lie

1. We’re just not that into you. We really don’t value you. So, what’s a lie going to hurt? We’ll get away with the lying for as long as we can. When we’re caught, so what? We never thought that much of you to begin with.

2. Because it’s easy. Women are emotional. If we can say or do something that will play favorably with a woman’s emotions, they eat it up every time. Amazing the dumb stuff women fall for. Most of the time women know they’re being lied to. Women have incredible instincts.  They just don’t want to believe they’re being lied to.

3. Because women really don’t need to know the truth. Telling the truth opens a multitude of questions, attitudes and reactions. What a woman doesn’t know keeps things peaceful. What a woman does know is when the problems occur.

4. To get what we want. Most times honesty won’t net us anything. We stand to lose more by being honest. So, if we have to lie to get something from a woman, that’s better than being honest and getting nothing at all.

5. Because women invite the lie. A woman has a question, a man has an answer. It’s just not the answer she wants. So, we like to keep things peaceful, or to prevent her from getting on her soapbox, becoming annoying. See #3.

Why did you have to be so honest? You should have just lied!

If we don’t lie, then the only other option is to be blunt or painfully honest, which many women don’t want / can’t handle. Sensitivity, emotions, and a frail ego make it difficult for some women to handle the plain truth.

2007 BMW 7-Series

I like BMW’s new big dog. The previous generation was very polarizing because of its Chris Bangle design influence; most notably on the C-pillar back to the trunk decklid and taillamps.  Oh, I can’t forget the headlamp assembly that made the car look like it had eyebrows!  The rear-end treatment was subsequently cleaned up in the mid-model refresh, making the design much more tolerable.

BMW, however, still doesn’t have it right. Looking at the rear of the car immediately sparks thoughts of the current Lexus LS and GS models. The influence of the Lexus design on the BMW 7 is hard to ignore in the character line, tail light treatment, bump in the trunk decklid, as well as the rear bumper. I do like that the side profile of the decklid resembles that of the current gen BMW 5-series.

It could be argued that it’s Lexus who ripped their designs from BMW. No matter, BMW needs to exercise great diligence in creating evolutionary, as well as leading-edge designs, that don’t conjure up memories of the competition… especially the likes of Lexus. Sure, Lexus has done well in establishing a reputation for itself. But, it’s no BMW.  Lexus doesn’t come anywhere close to having BMW’s heritage.

I’m still troubled by this front end. It doesn’t look like sufficient attention was given to the lower grille. The previous gen exhibited the same design issue. I do like the ‘snout’ molded around the signature BMW dual kidneys.  The snout, coupled with the wide-mouth lower grille, make the car look excessively wide and clumsy.  Again, it’s the very same issue that the previous generation BMW 7 exhibited.  This car needs some squint and sleekness.  It needs more cat than dog, or wide-mouth bass.

I know a car of this size needs to breathe. For the segment this vehicle operates in, however, the apparent lack of thoughtfulness and attention to these design elements is simply inexcusable.  Furthermore, the front-end design is not going to hold up over time.  It will be come dated very quickly, if not already.  BMW would be well served to take a page out of Audi’s book and come up with a design element that will withstand time.   The design theme should give proper consideration to preceding generations of the vehicle, as well as influence future design iterations; not only for the 7-Series, but for the broader BMW family since it is the marque’s flagship model.
